Questions readers ask

What does air-con servicing cost in Singapore?
On the price lists of the providers on this page, a one-off general service for a single wall-mounted unit runs from S$43.60 to S$50, and for two units from S$55 to S$70. A yearly contract of four visits for two units runs from S$200 to S$256. A chemical wash or chemical overhaul is priced per unit, from S$80 to S$220 on most lists and up to S$450 on one. Check what a figure includes: one list says its prices include GST and transport, two say theirs are before GST, one calls its prices nett, and the others do not say. Two providers publish no servicing prices. Ask also whether the outdoor condenser unit is covered and whether a diagnosis fee applies when nothing is repaired.
How do I choose one?
Decide first between a one-off visit and a yearly contract, then compare like with like: the number of units, the visits in a year and what each visit covers. Look for a stated workmanship warranty and read what voids it. Ask whether the technician who will handle refrigerant has completed ITE's Certificate of Competency in Residential Air-Conditioning System (Refrigerant); NEA publishes the list of those who have, with the company that sponsored each. If the work touches the outdoor unit's supports, BCA's rules matter: only a trained air-conditioning unit installer may install a unit on the outside of a building, and BCA advises owners to have a trained installer inspect the supports during routine servicing. BCA Academy publishes the list of trained installers by name and pass number. No scheme on CASE's list of CaseTrust-accredited businesses covers air-con servicing.
What should I check before booking?
The business's page in BCA's directory, which shows whether it is registered under workhead ME01 (Air-Conditioning, Refrigeration & Ventilation Works), its grade and the expiry date. BCA's registry is for firms that tender for public-sector work or hire foreign construction workers; it is not a licence to service home air-conditioners. Its grades are financial grades, so a higher one reflects a firm's financial standing and track record, not the quality of its servicing. Which business you are dealing with: several brands on this page work through more than one registered business, so ask whose name will be on the invoice. Every entry on this page shows the UEN, the Unique Entity Number, of the business in BCA's directory, which you can look up free on ACRA’s BizFile search. For an HDB flat, HDB advises having the condensing unit serviced regularly and asking the service provider whether rusted brackets need replacing; it says flat owners face a fine of up to S$20,000, a jail term of up to one year, or both, if a unit or its supports fall for lack of maintenance.
